BEIJING CITY, China, Center Of Authority: Series Of Disasters, Police Escort Official Limousines With Tinted Windows: Chairman Mao And Tiananmen

August, 1987
In Beijing city, on my first visit, my excited feelings were tinged with just a hint of trepidation, for this was the Capital of a country whose political beliefs were different to that of my own country. Beijing city has a large portrait of Chairman Mao facing Tiananmen Square.Beijing city was the power-centre of a country whose Rule Of Law was covertly enforced. Beijing city had only in recent years begun to open up to the outside world, and furthermore was still recovering from a series of disasters, some natural and some self inflicted. It was strange for me to see armed policemen and soldiers on the streets and I felt a trifle uncomfortable whenever approached by an official looking person in plain clothes, although I am sure that such feelings were unwarranted. We had very little contact with the ordinary people of this historic capital, as we travelled by coach from one place of interest to another, but the policemen sitting in their cars or riding their motorbikes, seemed to observe us with a trace of suspicion. At the time, most of the cars on the roads were official limousines with tinted windows, sometimes with a police escort, and Tiananmen Square was almost deserted as we passed through in the late afternoon, but it looked quite magical in the soft sunlight.
