Canal Journey Suzhou To Wuxi, Passing Brickworks, Lime Kilns, Timber Yards, Older Buildings: Under Bridges And Observing Activities On Barges And Embankment.
The canal journey from Suzhou to Wuxi gives you an insight into the lives of a particular group of Chinese people whose livelihood depends on the canal traffic and the available work along the canal embankment.
The canal is a busy thoroughfare for loaded barges, many with concrete hulls, and some with family cabins. The canal goes through agricultural land where crops are planted to the water's edge, favoured by white ducks, and through industrial centers where bricks are made, lime is slaked and timbers sawn. The canal life of the barge people can be witnessed as they cook, eat, sleep or knit, while children fish and bath by embankment steps. Everyday life on the embankment continues as you pass in your cruise boat, people tend their stalls, goods are transported by handcart, women wash clothes or attend to children, while men fish with lines and nets.
