China Interests mean different things to different people. China interests in monumentsYour China Interests might be monuments and temples. The China Interests of your partner; mountains and rivers. The China Interests of your business; factories and transport. My China interests have always been people and places off the beaten track. Facts and statistics about monuments, such as the one to "The Heroes Of The Revolution" at Tiananmen Square, or temples, mountains, rivers, business and transport, are readily available in books or on the internet, but to find out how ordinary people go about their lives, you must spend time with them.

Buddha in cave at Longzhou In 1995, after a visit to Tang's family in Huai Hua, we were returning by train to Changsha when I saw the steam train above shunting some wagons in one of the stations we passed through. It was only the second steam train I had seen in all my visits to China. The first one was in Chengde, where our minibus had to wait at a level crossing whilst the huge train crossed the road. It was a splendid sight !

In 1990, during a visit to Zhong's family in Longzhou, we went to Zhong Shan Park, which is near the river, and my friends took me to see the statue of the Buddha in a cave. The statue had been buried, for safe keeping, as soon as the Japanese Army approached the town, and was only uncovered after liberation. Some rather gruesome events had taken place near this spot during the war.

At The China Pages you'll discover an easy to use, informative and interesting web site.
