Chengde | Dalian | Dalian |
A Hawker sells his apples on the streets of Chengde in bitterly cold weather, despite the sun in a clear blue sky | This spectacular globe was in the main square of Dalian. A good landmark when approaching down one of the radiating roads. | The Golden Pebble Beach at Dalian was probably a very popular holiday resort during the summer months, but during February was almost deserted. |
Dalian | Beijing | Beijing |
A Temple Fair for the Chinese New Year, held on the street close to the Exhibition Center, and the Constellation Square | In the lobby of the Grand View Garden Hotel, stood this twice life size model of one of the Chinese Wise Men, the "Bringer Of Prosperity" | A man at the Temple Fair in Beijing formed shapes of fish, birds, dragons and the phoenix, out of boiling sugar. |
Suzhou | Chengde | Dazu |
We were taken to one of the pavilions in Liu Yuan Gardens to see the Mandarin's precious wood furniture, inlaid with stone. | The Three Arch Gate was the starting point of our walk to the Tibetan Style Dahongtai Palace, the Emperors' "Escaping The Heat Resort" | There are many sites near Dazu which have carved Buddha statues. In the one we visited there was a huge reclining Buddha entering Nirvana |
Wuxi | Guilin | Beijing |
We came out of the silk workshops and stood beside these building workers, who exchanged comments with their colleagues on the bamboo scaffolding across the road. | At the side of a lake opposite our hotel, two grandmas were having a good gossip. | In the Grand View Gardens these two boys were having their lunch. At the time, many chubby children could be seen in the city. Later the Government issued warnings about overfeeding. |
Xishuangbanna | Dazu | Nanjing |
Children of a minority group in Xishuangbanna showing signs of undernourishment. Young girls looked after younger children, but boys were given few chores, if any. | A visit to a farm house which was undoubtedly a showpiece for tourists, who were plied with many statistics concerning rice harvests. | A remarkable achievment of Chinese engineers constructing this bridge over the Yangtze river, when their resources were limited. |
Tongmu | Tongmu | Canal |
One street in Tongmu was lined with workshops, all connected with the making of coolie hats. | The Tongmu market also sold bundles of thin bamboo which families bought to take home to make coolie hats themslves, as a source of income. | The grand canal between Suzhou and Wuxi was bustling with activity, barges carrying their loads to unknown destinations. |
Suzhou | Shanghai | Yangshuo |
A superb example of the fine silk embroidery produced in the Suzhou workshops. The dog's head is on a reversible silk screen. | These two youths seemed to be sharing a good joke, in between knocking a hole in the street wall. | As we disembarked from our cruise boat at Yangshuo this man with his two birds was on the quay. I had to pay a few cents to take this photo |
