Country Road To Friendship Gate: Heavy Lorries With Wheels In Ditch;Walk To Vietnam, Entry Refused: Entry Souvenir Questioned By Chinese Official

July, 1993

The country road from Pingxiang was very busy. On this country road we were soon faced with a queue of heavy lorries and buses at a standstill, our driver overtaking as many of them as he could, until the cause of the hold-up came into view. A loaded lorry had its nearside wheels in a ditch, and a few yards further, on the opposite side, another lorry was in a similar position. Only walkers, bikes and motorbikes were able to get through. Passengers in the held-up buses and minibuses on both sides of the incident simply exchanged places, so we joined them and eventually arrived at the Chinese side of the border, and we walked through the Friendship Gate, just as I did in 1990.

At the Chinese Passport Control point an English speaking official questioned the number of my visits to China and why there was only an entry stamp but no exit stamp in my passport for 1987. When I told him it was simply a souvenir he just smiled and we all passed through. There was a long walk in the blazing sun along a new concrete road to the Vietnamese controls, where only I was refused entry. An official said that my Vietnamese Visa, issued in London, was not valid and that I should go to Guangzhou to get a new visa and then fly direct to Hanoi. It was decided that Man Bac should carry on with his visit to relatives in Vietnam, and Zhong, Xiu and I would return to Longzhou, so the three of us retraced our steps back to China !
