Dalian, China: Chinese Characters Inscribed On Rock Attracts Attention Of Chinese Gentleman. Cable Car Station Out Of Service.
February, 1999
Dalian Tiger Park, sometimes called "Tiger Beach", would probably have been quite crowded had the weather been much warmer, not very helpful when you want to take photographs, so I was selfish enough to be glad of a sunny but cold day. I was not the only one with camera in hand. There is something magical to the Chinese people, about Chinese characters inscribed on rocks and they like to have them included in their photographs, just like this gentleman on the rocky headland. Children, on the other hand, preferred to have their photographs taken sitting on the Tiger Models!
Leaving the harbour wall and the headland, we walked along the lower road back to the town and passed an unsafe-looking rowing boat being repaired near the water's edge. It looked like a fisherman's boat rather than a tourist boat, but it still could have been used to cross the bay, instead of by cable car from the station on the cliff; not operating at the time of our visit. I think I would have chosen the cable car for the journey, which would have taken us to the, "Chirping Birds Forest", although it is doubtful whether there would have been many "birds chirping" at that time of the year.
The road to town seemed a fairly new one and the side bank unfinished, with a few niches and small caves. I went to investigate one cave which looked fairly deep and interesting but having taken only a few steps into the entrance, beat a hasty retreat, as the cave seemed to have been regularly used as an emergency toilet. I will leave the rest to your imagination.
