On The Road From Tongmu: Vehicles Queue, People Chat And Smoke Cigarettes: Narrow Lanes In Rural Areas: Ping Xiang, China-Vietnam Border Crossing
October, 1995
On the road from Tong Mu there was a real log jam with vehicles queuing up behind us, and when I got out of the taxi to have a better look, the line of vehicles in front of us disappeared round a bend in the distance. People were getting out of the taxis, lorries and buses, to have a look for themselves with some going to sit upon nearby ridges to smoke a cigarette or have a chat with others.
On the road was the steam roller we had seen working at the junction, just four vehicles in front of us, so it seemed that resurfacing work was not the cause of this traffic jam. Traffic in 1995 had increased in substantial numbers since my first visit to China in 1987, and in many ways, narrow lanes, particularly in rural areas, were not yet ready to cope with such an increase. I had a similar experience as this one when travelling with some friends in a minibus, from Ping Xiang town towards a Chinese-Vietnamese border crossing, and that is where I will take you next, if I can get permission from my Group Leader !
