Pingxiang, South-West Of Nanning: Trading With Vietnam By Locals, Tolerant Authorities: New Road Between Official Control Points, Vital Link.
Pingxiang is a Chinese town near the Vietnamese border. Although the border was closed for many years, it is now completely open again, and trading takes place between the two countries. Pingxiang, and Langson in Vietnam, which is just across the border, are vital links for the people living in the area, who trade with each other, some on a very small scale. A new road has been constructed linking the countries' control points, and on this road during a visit in 1993, we saw loads being transferred between Chinese lorries and Vietnamese lorries. On the Chinese side of the border you will find the "Friendship Gate" and even in 1990, members of the Chinese armed forces liked to have their photographs taken here, as a memento.
A convenient mountain pass between the two towns, away from the official control points was a hive of activity, as Chinese and Vietnamese traded with each other, under the tolerant eyes of the local authorities. Similar trading was in operation across the border river at Xui Kou.
