Poor Street Boy Entertainer Displays Strength Or Cunning: Three Arch Gate Of White Marble And Blue Tiles. Photographs As Memento Of Visit To Mausoleum Of China President
August, 1987
A poor street boy was amongst some street traders further down the street, who were displaying their goods on the pavement,
one selling a means of testing the purity of gold. The poor street boy entertainer was not only inviting the spectators to test their skills at the "Three Card Trick" and "Find The Lady", but was also demonstrating his inner strength or his wily cunning, by tying a length of wire around his chest and then breaking it, by expanding his chest. Whether it was faked or not I shall never know, but when I took a photograph during his performance, he immediately asked for a fee, and who can blame him ? Perhaps he is now one of the richest men in the area, which is not beyond the realms of possibility, because even the first President of China, Dr Sun Yat-sen, was the son of a peasant family, and his Mausoleum was on our itinerary.
It was his wish that he should be buried in Nanjing but perhaps he would not have expected to have been given such an impressive memorial. The first glimpse of the Mausoleum is through the three arch entrance gate of white marble and blue glazed tiles, and this is a popular background for photographs, not only for the foreign visitors, but also for the Chinese people themselves, as a treasured memento of their visit.
