Shanghai Bund, A Tree Lined Boulevard: Father Nurses Baby And Men Sleep In Heat Of Day: Hole In Wall Causes Imagination And Frustration

August, 1987
The Shanghai Bund is a wide, tree lined boulevard. The Shanghai Bund sweeps along the side of the Huangpo River, Cargo and cruise boats go up the Yangtze River. where cruise ships moor at the quays, and where the booming horns of cargo boats can be heard. While we were there some stalls were selling ice creams and cold drinks, others postcards and mementoes. There was no litter on the boulevard, and a notice in Chinese Characters, fixed to one of the trees, was easily understood, even by the foreigners. The pretty colourful summer dresses of two of the foreigners, strolling along the boulevard, contrasted sharply with the black and white clothes of the Chinese, which seemed to be the norm in most of the places we visited, but in later years this would change, as they had more disposable income and became fashion conscious. On a bench under the trees The Shanghai Bund attracts lovers. a father proudly nursed his young baby and on other benches young men slept in the heat of the day. It is here that the young men bring their girlfriends in the evenings, away from their crowded homes, where there is little privacy.

Two young girls gazed intently at us as we passed then broke into an excited chatter, just as our group in 1987 did, when we were travelling in the coach and saw something different through the window, so it seems that the foreigners and the nationals had at least one thing in common, even if the languages were completely different ! We would be taken to some of the places of interest in every town and city we visited, but by walking the streets or gazing through the coach window, there was the opportunity to form one's own opinion about the lives of the ordinary Chinese people. Workers usually do not question instructions.

Fleeting glimpses captured the imagination, then came the frustration from not knowing their thoughts or topic of conversation.
