Suzhou Train Journey From Shanghai. Attendant Removes Empty Cans, Unwanted Papers, Used Ash Trays: Cycle-Carts And Rickshaws On Street Near Silk Workshop
August, 1987.
Suzhou silk embroidery was one of the reasons for visiting this town in 1987. Our travels in China to date, had been by bus, boat and plane, but for the journey from Shanghai to Suzhou, we travelled by train. The coach was very clean, with comfortable soft seats, and on freshly laundered cloths on each of the tables between the facing seats, stood a potted plant and a thermos flask of hot water. The coach attendant regularly checked whether thermos flasks or used ash trays needed replacing, and removed any empty cans or unwanted papers from the tables. Once during the journey a trolley was brought round with "China Goods", and I bought a pair of red cushion covers with a gold landscape pattern. This was a package tour, so we travelled in style !
The main streets were much wider and quieter than Shanghai, so the many cyclists were less troubled by cars and coaches and could move around quite leisurely, but in the narrower street near the embroidery workshops, there were cycle-rickshaws and loaded cycle-carts with which to contend.
