End Of Yangshuo Cruise From Guilin: Crazy Water Buffalo Ambles Down Yellow Mud Track Then Stampedes. Busy Women Workers In Paddy Fields
August, 1987.
The Yangshuo cruise from Guilin would be talked about later, but when we returned to our coach for the journey back to Guilin, the topic of conversation between all the group, was about what had been seen in the town; what had been bought; and about the bargaining that had taken place. As the coach started its journey, all this chatter ended, because of the other attractions to be viewed through the windows, as we moved out of the town. Farmers in the countryside were at work planting rice seedlings in the flooded paddy fields. During our journey, the coach stopped for a while at a spot where a track through the paddy fields joined the road. It was a "photo session" for the tourists, as nearby,
three women were uprooting rice seedlings ready to be taken to the paddy fields for planting. The women wore different types of coolie hats as they crouched in the yellow mud, and they smiled shyly at the tourists who were taking so much interest in their work, although I am sure it was something they had experienced many times. Down the track, a young women was shepherding a plodding water buffalo towards us. When it got closer to the group, it obviously decided that it did not like what it saw, because it suddenly went charging through the paddy fields, with the unfortunate woman chasing after the departing beast. A water buffalo is a very valuable part of a farmer's stock, not only as a beast of burden but also for pulling the ploughs when the paddy fields have to be tilled, so we all hoped that eventually the women would recover her charge without harm. Before creating any more trouble for the busy workers, we got back on the coach and completed our journey to the hotel without further incident.
The following day we would leave Guilin for Shanghai.
